Melton Fabric for Coats
Classic Melton is a starting reference for a restrained coat surface. Use the sample to decide whether its fold, bulk and movement fit your design.

What to compare with the sample
Silhouette
Ask for a sample large enough to compare fold and structure against your coat shape.
Construction
Review seams, collars, lapels and the amount of bulk your garment can accept.
Specification
Confirm the composition, finished GSM and usable width of the proposed article.
Keep the photograph and specification separate
The reference shows a visual direction. Composition, GSM, usable width, finishing and availability are not documented for a specific article here. Ask Fred to identify suitable current references and provide the required specifications.
From direction to development
Prepare a melton sample enquiry
A photograph starts the conversation. Physical samples help you make the decision.
Build a comparison around one garment
Choose one garment brief before you compare this direction with another fabric family. State whether the surface should read quietly or visibly, where you need structure and where you want movement. List lining, interlining and the garment areas you intend to trial.
Ask Fred to identify suitable articles for that brief. The composition, weight, usable width and finish should belong to the proposed article, rather than being borrowed from another cloth in the same family. Keep a firm fibre restriction visible when specifications are still unknown.
Make the sample request useful
Use a swatch for first visual selection, a larger cutting for a defined drape or making question, and sample metreage for a pattern-based garment trial. Ask about the available format, charges and timing instead of assuming every development direction can ship immediately.
Record reference identity, observed result and open questions for each candidate. Before final article approval, review the intended care, colour approval and any buyer-required tests. This creates a practical comparison rather than a claim that the photograph has established performance.
