What are woolen fabrics?
In textile processing, woolen fabrics (also spelled woollen fabrics) are made using the woollen yarn system, which is distinct from worsted processing. Buyers also use the term broadly when discussing wool and wool-blend apparel cloth. The name alone does not declare the wool percentage, weight or suitability of a particular article. See Woolmark’s explanation of the processing systems.
Start with the garment you are developing, compare the actual surface and sample, then confirm the proposed article. Our woolen fabric definition guide and woolen vs worsted comparison explain the terminology.
Choose a starting direction around your garment question
| Fabric direction | Question to resolve with a sample | Explore |
|---|---|---|
| Melton | Does the fold and seam bulk suit the coat silhouette? | Melton fabric for coats |
| Tweed | How do the texture and pattern look across panels and seams? | Tweed fabric directions |
| Flannel | Does the actual drape and pressing result fit the garment? | Flannel fabric directions |
| Bouclé | How does the looped surface work with seams, lining and trims? | Bouclé fabric directions |
| Double-faced wool | Which face and edge construction will the maker use? | Double-faced fabric development |
| Wool blends | Which fibre declaration meets the project requirements? | Wool-blend fabric directions |
Fabric names are selection starting points. Confirm composition and construction for the actual article; use the GSM and linear-metre calculator when comparing weight units.
