Fabric fundamentals
What are woolen fabrics?
Understand the yarn-processing term, the broader sourcing language and the article information you still need before choosing a fabric.
The technical meaning
Wool can be processed through woollen or worsted yarn systems. Woollen processing generally produces a bulkier yarn with a less parallel fibre arrangement; worsted processing uses combing and more aligned fibres. The yarn system is different from the declared fibre percentage and the finished fabric weight.
Woolen is the American spelling and woollen is common in British English. In sourcing conversations, these words are also used more broadly for wool-containing fabrics. Ask the supplier which construction and yarn system apply to the proposed article instead of deciding from a trade name alone.
Start with the garment question
For a coat, you may need to compare body, fold and seam bulk. For a jacket, pattern scale and the planned internal structure may matter. For trousers or a skirt, movement, making and the intended care route need review. A family name such as Melton, tweed or flannel helps start this discussion but cannot complete it.
Choose two or three visual starting points, request identifiable physical samples and keep the garment purpose beside each reference. Compare like-for-like sample sizes and construction trials. If your project has a firm composition, GSM, width or performance requirement, leave it as an open check until the exact article is documented.
| Question | What to obtain |
|---|---|
| What is it made of? | Declared fibre composition for the proposed article |
| How is it constructed? | Yarn system, weave and finishing information where required |
| How does it behave? | Physical sample and garment-making trial |
| Can I order it? | Confirmed article, sample availability and commercial terms |
