Plan Woolen Fabric Sample Quantity for a Garment Trial
Estimate trial metreage from the garment and confirmed fabric width. Include pattern matching, direction and the separate tests you intend to carry out.

Define the sample-making task
List the garment type, pattern size and number of prototypes. State whether you need only a construction trial or a complete fitting and wear sample. Add separate material tests or repeat trials where required so their quantity is visible rather than assumed.
A quantity estimate without a pattern and width basis is only a preliminary request. Give Fred that status explicitly and ask which article widths are available for discussion. The actual usable width must be confirmed before a reliable marker estimate is finalized.
Account for the direction and repeat
Ask the pattern maker whether the fabric can be laid in either direction or requires a one-way plan. For checks and herringbones, record the matching areas and the repeat information you still need. These decisions can change the marker result.
Keep the prototype estimate separate from allowances for testing, replacements or another fitting. Do not insert an arbitrary waste percentage and call it a verified consumption. The responsible garment team should explain the basis of the estimate.
Request the amount with the right unit and purpose
Specify metres or yards and avoid changing units silently between the brief and supplier reply. State the selected references, proposed article if known, target colour and sample purpose. Ask Fred to confirm what quantity can be supplied and under what arrangement.
When a material or pattern changes, review the quantity rather than carrying the old estimate forward. Save the marker basis and sample requirement with the development record. This creates a clearer discussion about prototype needs while leaving commercial arrangements to Fred.
A practical record for your sample discussion
| Decision | Record | Question for Fred |
|---|---|---|
| Prototype | Size, pattern and number | What will be made? |
| Width | Confirmed usable width | What is the marker basis? |
| Direction / repeat | Orientation and matching | What layout limits apply? |
| Other needs | Tests and repeat trials | Which amounts are separate? |
Questions buyers ask
How many metres are needed for one coat?
Use the actual pattern, size, width and trial plan. There is no universal quantity for every coat.
Can I state yards in the brief?
Yes. Select yards and keep that unit in the supplier discussion.
Is prototype quantity the same as bulk consumption?
Keep them separate. Development trials and the approved production marker can have different requirements.
