Fabric fundamentals
Woolen vs worsted fabric: what changes in your selection?
Compare the yarn-processing routes, then test the actual fabric against your garment. Neither term alone establishes the composition, weight or performance.
Compare the yarn system first
The woollen and worsted systems prepare fibres differently. Woollen yarn generally keeps a less parallel arrangement and a bulkier character. Worsted preparation includes combing and fibre alignment before spinning. The final cloth also depends on its yarn, weave, density and finishing.
These are useful processing distinctions, rather than a rule that every woolen cloth is thick or every worsted cloth is light. A photograph of a smooth or raised surface cannot prove the yarn system. Request the article construction when that distinction is important to your brief.
| Decision | How to compare |
|---|---|
| Surface appearance | Use the actual finish and sample; do not infer the yarn system from the photo |
| Structure and movement | Compare same-sized cuttings and the planned lining or interlining |
| Weight and thickness | Record confirmed units, width basis and article specification |
| Use and care | State the garment route and agree the relevant article-specific checks |
Choose around the construction
Describe whether the garment needs a quieter surface, visible texture, more body or more movement. Supply a known physical reference if possible. Ask Fred to propose suitable articles, including alternatives when the first sample does not meet the making question.
Use sample metreage for a realistic garment trial when the decision depends on seams, pressing, lining or the complete silhouette. An article that appears promising as a small swatch can still require a different construction or finish. Record the observation, requirement and next action rather than approving the material from terminology alone.
Questions buyers ask
Is worsted always better than woolen?
No. Compare the proposed article with the appearance, construction and use your garment needs.
Does woolen mean 100% wool?
It does not replace a fibre-content declaration. Obtain the exact composition for the proposed article.
Can a flannel name settle the distinction?
No. Request the yarn and construction information where it matters, then compare the physical cloth.
