Wool Fabric Colourfastness: Check Rubbing and Colour Transfer
A colour that matches your approved swatch can still need a separate review for transfer onto lining or clothing. When coloured marks appear, record the contact situation before changing the care process. Use the observation to request relevant evidence; a quick wipe is a screening note, not a standard colourfastness report.
Record where and how the mark appeared
Identify the fabric article, colour and sample version, the receiving material, and whether contact was dry, damp or followed care. Photograph both surfaces under consistent light. Note loose coloured fibres separately from a stain; do not decide the mechanism from a photograph alone. Preserve the samples and avoid washing away the evidence before the supplier has reviewed it.
Request results that answer the actual question
Ask for the stated rubbing method, version, sample identity and separate dry and wet results where relevant. Have the laboratory or supplier explain the assessment scale and any required acceptance criteria. Do not invent a universal pass grade for all wool fabrics. Shade matching, rubbing, washing and perspiration address different questions; one approval should not silently cover them all.
Check the contact pairing in the garment
Review the proposed shell with the actual lining, facing, underlayer or trim it will touch. Ask the maker for a representative prototype check under the intended construction and agreed care route. Keep this practical observation separate from laboratory results. If the finish, colourway or receiving material changes, decide whether the evidence still applies rather than copying approval between visually similar samples.
Close the issue before confirming bulk use
Keep the report, colour reference, garment-contact trial and decision under the same article identity. Ask the supplier how the delivered material will link to that reference and which deviations need review. A claimed company capability is not a test result for this fabric. If transfer remains unresolved, record the open question and obtain a revised proposal before approving the affected use.
Separate three kinds of evidence
| Question | Evidence | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Does the shade match? | Physical colour comparison | The agreed shade reference |
| Does rubbing transfer colour? | Identified rubbing report and stated conditions | The reported result for that sample and method |
| Does the garment pairing work? | Actual materials in a prototype | The reviewed contact combination, within the trial scope |
Colour-transfer questions
Does a dry rubbing result also approve wet contact?
No. Request the relevant conditions and results separately; do not assume they are interchangeable.
Should I wash the sample to fix transfer before review?
Do not change the agreed care route as an unrecorded remedy. Preserve the observation and ask the supplier and maker how to investigate.
Write a colourfastness sample request
State the article and colour, intended contact materials, care route and observed issue. Request relevant reports and enough sample material for the garment pairing. Separate colour appearance approval from performance approval, and record any colour or finishing change that needs a fresh review.
AATCC TM8 covers dry and wet rubbing. AATCC: TM8 scope.
