Woolen Fabric Pilling: What to Check in Samples

Do not approve pilling resistance from a photograph or fibre percentage. Connect the intended garment use to an agreed test and the exact proposed fabric article.

Describe the expected use

List the garment’s high-contact areas and the use pattern you need to evaluate: sleeve against body, bag straps, seat contact or repeated handling. These are inputs to a testing discussion. They do not establish a pass grade or prove that one photographed surface will perform better.

Keep appearance preferences separate from performance requirements. A textured, smooth or raised-looking surface can each require evaluation. Fibre, yarn, construction, finishing and the garment’s use may influence the outcome; a single label such as “wool blend” is not a test report.

Ask for an article-specific test basis

Discuss the required method, exposure or cycle basis, assessment procedure and acceptance criterion with the buyer, supplier or laboratory. A grade without that context is difficult to compare. Check that any report identifies the proposed article and relevant finishing revision.

If your brand has its own requirement, share it at the sample stage. Ask whether the requested test will use a development cutting or production-representative material. Keep that distinction in the approval record rather than extending one result to every later colour and finish.

Record what the sample trial can and cannot show

A making or wear trial can reveal a practical concern and guide the next investigation. It does not replace a specified laboratory method when an objective acceptance decision is required. Describe the observed change and trial conditions without labelling an untested reference “anti-pilling”.

If a result falls short, review the construction or finishing options with Fred and retest the revised article where required. Keep the reference, issue, proposed change and follow-up evidence together. The useful outcome is a defined decision path rather than an unconditional performance promise.

Questions buyers ask

Does more wool mean less pilling?

Fibre percentage alone cannot establish the result. Compare the specific article and test evidence.

Is a bouclé reference guaranteed to pill?

No such conclusion is made from the photograph. State the use and test requirements.

Do these cards contain pilling grades?

No. Ask Fred about the proposed article and applicable testing.
