Fabric Swatches or Sample Metreage? Choose the Next Step
Ask for the sample format that can answer your next development question. A visual swatch, a larger cutting and prototype metreage serve different purposes.

Use a swatch to narrow a visual direction
A swatch can help compare colour family, visible texture and the first physical impression. Keep its label and identify which direction it represents. If the question concerns a pattern larger than the cutting, ask for another format rather than drawing a conclusion from an incomplete repeat.
Do not treat a small visual swatch as evidence for every making or performance requirement. Record the specifications and trials still open. The useful first decision is which directions deserve a more detailed comparison, not approval of bulk from appearance alone.
Use a larger cutting for a defined construction question
A larger cutting can support a simple drape comparison or a specific seam, collar, pocket or trim trial. Explain the planned use so Fred can discuss sample dimensions and availability. Ask for face and length-direction information where it matters.
Keep the construction trial focused. Record the article identity and the process being assessed so you can compare another cutting on the same basis. If formal testing is required, discuss the sample format and amount with the laboratory or technical team.
Plan prototype metreage with the garment maker
A full sample garment needs a quantity based on its pattern, sizes, width, direction, matching and trial plan. Ask the garment maker to prepare that estimate and include any repeat trials. Do not copy a universal “metres per coat” number into every enquiry.
State the amount and unit you need, while allowing Fred to confirm the sample arrangement, fees, colour and timing. Keep sample metreage separate from your estimated bulk order. Use the shortlist and brief to make the next request specific enough to discuss.
A practical record for your sample discussion
| Decision | Record | Question for Fred |
|---|---|---|
| Swatch | Visual narrowing | Colour, texture, first impression |
| Larger cutting | Focused material or making question | Dimensions and purpose |
| Prototype metreage | Complete garment trial | Pattern-based amount and width |
| Test sample | Defined technical requirement | Method-specific amount |
Questions buyers ask
Are samples free?
Fees and shipping are confirmed by Fred for the project. No free-sample promise is made here.
How quickly will samples ship?
Ask Fred about the current article and arrangement. This site does not promise a fixed dispatch time.
Should I request all seven references?
Begin with a smaller set tied to one garment brief, then expand only where a question remains.
