Pressing Wool Fabric: Prevent Shine and Seam Impressions

A wool coat or pair of trousers can look right before pressing and develop unwanted shine or seam outlines afterwards. Before changing the fabric, separate the surface you approved from the changes caused by making. A small, recorded pressing trial helps the maker find a workable process for the actual article.

Identify what changed

Compare an untouched piece with the pressed piece under the same light, from both directions. Mark the face and nap. Is the change a bright patch, flattened texture, seam outline, colour change or distortion? Photograph both with the article reference. An intended lustrous finish and a new shiny patch are different approval questions.

Confirm the permitted process

Request the proposed composition, finish and care instructions. Ask the maker to select a trial process compatible with every layer, including lining and interlining. A machine's “wool” setting does not establish suitable conditions for every blend or garment assembly. Where the care instruction prohibits ironing, do not use ironing as a remedy.

Compare a flat trial with a constructed trial

Keep an untouched control and test a separate piece before working on saleable panels. Start with the maker's agreed method, including any pressing cloth or support. Then trial a seam, folded edge and the actual layer stack. Record equipment, heat setting, steam, pressure, contact time and cooling; change one factor at a time so the result remains traceable.

Inspect after cooling and decide

Allow the trial to cool and dry before comparing appearance, shape and handle with the control. Check seam visibility from the garment face and inspect brushed areas from both directions. Stop if discolouration, scorching or persistent deformation appears; additional heat is not an approval method. Keep the accepted sample and process together. A successful flat trial alone does not approve the finished garment.

Pressing questions

Can I press every wool blend at the same temperature?

No. Confirm the actual composition, finish, care instructions and garment layers with the maker; a family name is not a temperature specification.

Can more steam always remove shine?

No. Assess the cause on a separate trial piece. Do not promise that an already altered surface can be restored.

Add a useful question to your sample brief

State the article, garment, affected area, layer construction and available pressing equipment. Request enough material for an untouched control and a constructed trial. Ask which appearance will be approved and who will record the process before bulk making.
